
Getting Low-E Glass Preheating Right (Even When It’s Huge)
Preheating wide-format Low-E glass is a bit of a headache. You need the heat to be perfectly flat across the entire sheet. If one spot is colder than the rest, you’ve got a problem. Most standard infrared lamps just can’t keep up once your production line hits that 3-meter mark. That’s where we come in. We build custom, ultra-long infrared heating units specifically for those massive drying tunnels. The struggle with 3-meter+ units Here’s the thing: when you stretch a heating element past 3 meters, physics starts working against you. You run into cold spots. You deal with voltage drops. If you aren’t careful, the glass warps. To fix this, we don’t just “plug and play.” We calculate the exact wattage needed per meter. We use high-density quartz tubes to keep the footprint small without sacrificing power. But you can’t just crank the dial. If you push too many watts into one long circuit, you’ll fry the ends of the lamp. To stop that from happening, we split the load across several controlled zones. It keeps the heat steady and the equipment alive. The nuts and bolts We stick with short-wave infrared. Why? Because it hits the glass surface faster. In a Low-E coating line, you need that temperature to ramp up now, not in five minutes. We also beef up the quartz envelopes. These things have to survive the physical stress of being installed over a long span. We use heavy-duty connectors because nobody wants to deal with flickering or arcing in the middle of a shift. Plus, the housing is made from materials that can take the heat without twisting or warping over time. A few things to watch out for A 3-meter array puts out a massive amount of heat. It’s intense. Because of that, you can’t ignore your ventilation. If your airflow is weak, all that ambient heat just sits there, and your surrounding machinery will take a beating. We also suggest using independent PID controllers for each section. It’s the best way to make sure you don’t overshoot your temperature target and ruin a batch of glass.
