Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right (Without Wasting Power)
We build our infrared heaters with an IPX5 rating because bathrooms are basically steam rooms. You can’t have your gear shorting out the second someone takes a hot shower. But here is the real trick for you as an engineer: it’s not just about keeping the water out. It’s about picking the right wattage so your users aren’t shivering—and you aren’t throwing money away on electricity.
Space vs. Power: The Balancing Act
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t actually warm up the air. It warms up the people and the things in the room. Because of that, the size of the bathroom changes everything. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—anything under 4m²—a small lamp (around 250W to 400W) does the job perfectly. If you go too big here, the room gets hot too fast. The thermal cutoff kicks in, the heater clicks on and off constantly, and before you know it, you’ve worn out the relays. For the bigger bathrooms, maybe 6m² to 10m², you’ll want to jump up to 600W or 800W. In those larger spaces, cold walls tend to soak up the warmth, so you need a bit more punch to make the room actually feel cozy.
The Catch with Waterproofing
That IPX5 rating is great—it means the unit can handle a direct spray of water thanks to our gaskets and housing. But there’s a trade-off. Those seals that keep water out also keep heat in. When you put a high-wattage lamp in a tight, waterproof box, the inside gets scorching. To keep the lamp from burning out, you’ve got to make sure the housing can breathe or dissipate that heat. Using a timer is also a smart move here.
How to Save Energy (And Your Sanity)
Don’t just default to the biggest lamp available. It’s a waste. Instead, think about the “heat zone.” Where is the person actually standing? If you put a medium-wattage lamp directly over that spot, it feels way warmer than a massive lamp tucked away in a corner. Plus, if you pair it with a precision thermostat, the output stays steady. It’s simpler, cheaper to run, and feels much more natural for the person using it.
