
Why it’s time to ditch those old bathroom heat lamps
Ever notice how those old-school halogen heat lamps always seem to die right when you need them most? It’s not a coincidence. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. The steam and humidity sneak into the housing, fry the wiring, or just rust the heating element until it pops. That’s why we’re seeing a big shift toward waterproof infrared heaters. They just make more sense for the space.
How it actually works
Here is the thing about traditional lamps: they try to heat the air. But in a bathroom—where you’ve got cold drafts and thick steam—trying to warm up the air is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. It’s a waste of power. Infrared is different. Instead of fighting the air, it sends heat directly to your skin and the floor. It feels like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. To keep things safe, we use sealed quartz tubes tucked inside waterproof shells (look for IP44 or IP65 ratings). This is huge because it stops stray water droplets from hitting the hot glass. Without that seal, the glass would just crack from the sudden temperature change.
Built to handle the steam
We stopped using open-air designs because, frankly, they don’t last. Now, we use silicone gaskets and tempered glass to keep the moisture out. We also route the wiring through sealed conduits. This stops water from “creeping” along the wires and ending up in the electrical terminals. The result? A heater that can handle a steamy shower or a few direct splashes without tripping your breaker and leaving you in the dark.
A few things to keep in mind
If you’re swapping out an old ceiling heater, these usually fit right into the same spot. Just a heads-up: they pull a lot of power, so you’ll likely need a dedicated circuit to keep things running smoothly. One more tip: infrared heat is intense. If you mount the unit too low, it can feel a bit too “hot” on your head. You’ll want to check the wattage and set the height so the warmth spreads evenly across the floor. It takes a second to get the placement right, but it’s worth it. You get instant heat the moment you flip the switch, which beats waiting an hour for a towel rail to get lukewarm.
