Why we’re swapping old bathroom lamp warmers for IP65 infrared heaters
Let’s be honest: those old-school bathroom lamp warmers usually can’t handle the heat—or the steam. If you’ve ever had one flicker out or just stop working after a few months of steamy showers, you know exactly what I mean. That’s why we’ve started moving toward IP65-rated infrared heaters. It’s not about making the bathroom look fancy. It’s about making sure your electronics don’t freak out in a room full of water vapor.
What’s the deal with “IP65”?
If you aren’t a tech geek, “IP65” sounds like a serial number. But in plain English, it just means the unit is sealed tight. Dust can’t get in, and water jets can’t get in either. In a bathroom, steam is the enemy. It sneaks into the circuitry and fries the terminals, which is why those cheap heaters burn out so fast. By sealing the guts of the heater, we keep the moisture out. It stays working, and more importantly, it stays safe.
Why infrared actually works
Most heaters try to warm up the air. The problem? Air is terrible at holding onto heat. You end up waiting forever for the room to feel warm, and the second you turn it off, the chill comes right back. Infrared is different. It doesn’t mess with the air; it sends out a wave of heat that hits you—and your towels—directly. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. You flip the switch, and you feel it.Immediately. We use short-wave elements because they pack a lot of punch into a small box.
A few things to watch out for
If you’re installing one of these, give your circuit breaker a quick check. These units pull a decent amount of power to get that “instant heat” feeling, so you want to make sure your wiring can handle the load. And here is the big one:the emitter gets hot. Really hot. Since the heating element itself can cause burns if you touch it, placement is everything. You can’t just slap it anywhere. If you mount it too high, you won’t feel the warmth. Too low, and someone might accidentally lean against it. You have to find that sweet spot where it keeps you cozy but stays well out of reach.
