
Why Your Bathroom Heater Shouldn’t Blind You
Ever stepped into a bathroom, flipped on the heater, and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? Most of these heaters use short-wave infrared to get you warm instantly. It works great, but the light is the problem. Those halogen bulbs often put out a harsh, blinding white glare. It’s annoying for adults, but for a baby with developing eyes, it’s actually a real concern. We figured out a way to fix that by tweaking how the light behaves.
Cutting the glare, keeping the heat
We don’t just dim the bulb—that would just make the room cold. Instead, we use special quartz glass with built-in coatings or specific gases inside the bulb. Think of it like a pair of high-tech sunglasses for your heater. These filters block the bright, visible light that hurts your eyes, but they let the thermal waves slide right through. You get all the warmth, but none of the blinding flash. It’s all about hitting a specific sweet spot (the 0.7 to 1.4 micron range). This ensures the energy goes straight into your skin to warm you up, rather than hitting your retina.
Staying safe and warm
These lamps are built to heat up in seconds. No waiting around shivering in a towel. To make sure the unit is safe for the whole family, we use high-temperature reflectors. They act like a mirror, bouncing the heat downward onto you and keeping the actual fixture cool to the touch. There’s a bit of a balancing act here. If we just crank up the wattage in a small space, the glare comes back. So, we fine-tune the voltage and the thickness of the filament. The goal is a steady, cozy heat without the light spike.
The honest trade-off
Here’s the catch: filtering the light isn’t free. Any coating that blocks the bright light also blocks a tiny bit of the heat. You lose maybe 5-10% of the raw power to make the spectrum safe for your eyes. In a home bathroom, that’s a trade we’re happy to make. I’d much rather the heater run for an extra minute than have you squinting every time you take a shower.
