
Making IR Heaters That Actually Last
When you’re dealing with high ceilings in a warehouse or an industrial bay, you aren’t just fighting the cold. You’re fighting the environment. Between the humidity and the random grime in the air, these places are brutal on equipment. Most heaters fail in two spots: the heating element and the wiring. We spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening.
The battle against condensation
Here’s the thing about big industrial spaces: you get these wild temperature swings. That leads to condensation. When water droplets land on a scorching hot emitter, they create these tiny, freezing cold spots. The glass expands and contracts unevenly, and before you know it, the quartz tube cracks or the filament just gives up. It’s a frustrating way to lose a heater. To fix this, we changed the shape of the unit and added special coatings. It’s all about surface tension. Instead of water pooling up, it just slides right off. This keeps the heat even and stops the tube from stressing out.
Keeping the water out
The real nightmare is when water gets into the terminal blocks. That’s where most units die. If a bit of splash water or oil mist hits those high-voltage terminals, you get arcing. You’ll hear that snap, your breakers will trip, and your contact points are toast. Not a great way to spend a Tuesday. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed enclosures to lock the electrical guts away from the chaos. These seals are tough, too—they don’t get brittle or crack after a few hundred heat cycles.
A quick heads-up on mounting
There is a trade-off here. Adding all those seals and protective housings makes the heater a bit bulkier. It also means the air doesn’t flow quite as freely around the back. Because of that, you can’t just smash these units flat against the ceiling. Give them some breathing room. If you pack them too tightly, the internals run hotter than they should, and you’ll end up shaving a few thousand hours off the life of the machine. Just leave a gap, and they’ll keep humming along for years.
