You end up wiping a streak through the glass with a towel, which just leaves a smear. That’s where infrared (IR) mirror heaters come in. Unlike those old-school heaters that try to warm up the entire room, these go straight for the glass and you. It’s a different kind of heat. When you hook these up to a smart home system, you’re basically getting rid of that annoying wait time. The magic of “instant” heat We use short-wave infrared emitters because they don’t mess around. They hit their target temperature in seconds. If you add a smart relay or a Zigbee controller to the mix, you can trigger the heat with your phone or just by walking into the room via a motion sensor. The signal hits the power module, the current jumps into the element, and suddenly it feels like spring in the middle of January. No waiting for the air to warm up—just a clear mirror and a warm face. Keeping things under control Now, you can’t just plug these in and hope for the best. You need a steady power supply. Depending on the wattage, you’re looking at either low-voltage DC or standard AC. I usually suggest using PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) controllers. Think of it as a way to manage how “dense” the heat is. Without this—or a decent thermal cutoff—you risk overheating the glass. Nobody wants a cracked mirror or ruined silvering because the heater went rogue. A few things to watch out for Speed comes with a trade-off. Because these emitters are so powerful, they pull a lot of current the moment they kick on. You’ve got to make sure your wiring is beefy enough to handle that initial spike. The IR radiation can actually trick the sensor into thinking someone is there, which creates this annoying loop where the system just clicks on and off. Just offset the sensor a bit, and you’re golden.
