Ever notice how those old-school bathroom heat lamps always seem to burn out right when you need them? There’s a reason for that. Most of them just aren’t built for the steam and splashes of a real bathroom. That’s why we’ve been moving toward IP55-rated infrared heaters lately. It isn’t about making the room look fancy—it’s about making sure the thing actually works and doesn’t become a safety hazard. The deal with IP55 and moisture If you see “IP55” on a box, it basically means the heater is sealed up tight against dust and water jets. In a bathroom, steam is the enemy. Those cheap, open-element heaters let moisture seep right into the electrical terminals. Once that happens, you get oxidation, short circuits, and a dead heater within a couple of years. We seal the infrared elements and the wiring so the water stays out. It keeps the internals clean and, more importantly, keeps the unit running for way longer. Infrared vs. the old way Here is the big difference: traditional heaters try to warm up the air. But if you’ve got a drafty bathroom, that heat just floats away the second you crack the door open. Infrared is different. It doesn’t care about the air. It sends out waves that heat up the things they hit—your skin, the tiles, the walls. You feel the warmth the second you step under it. No more standing around shivering while you wait for the room to warm up. A few things to keep in mind Now, there are some trade-offs. To get that waterproof seal, we have to use thicker gaskets and tighter housings. This means the unit can’t “breathe” as easily, so the materials have to be tough enough to handle the heat without warping. And a quick tip: if you’re putting these in a tiny, cramped shower stall with no vent, it’ll get hot. Fast. You’ll want a thermostat that’s dialed in perfectly, otherwise, you’re basically stepping into a sauna. At the end of the day, switching to these units just means fewer repair calls and a lot more peace of mind. It’s a simple hardware swap that makes a massive difference in how a bathroom actually feels.
