
Keeping Bathrooms Warm Without Blinding the Kids
When you’re designing an infrared heater for a bathroom, you’re dealing with a tricky mix. You’ve got constant steam, wet floors, and—most importantly—babies. The last thing any parent wants is a heater that feels like a stadium floodlight reflecting off a white tiled wall. You want the warmth, but you don’t want that harsh, blinding glare that comes with standard halogen tubes. The trick to protecting the eyes Most short-wave IR lamps throw off way too much visible light and UV. It’s a lot for sensitive eyes to handle. To fix this, we tweaked the spectrum. By playing around with the quartz composition and adding some internal coatings, we managed to filter out that sharp, white light. Now, instead of a glare that makes you squint, you get a soft, dimmed glow. It’s gentle on the eyes—especially for infants—but still pushes all that cozy heat right to the skin. Fighting the humidity Water and electronics? Not a great match. That’s why we went with an IP55 rating. It basically means we’ve sealed the guts of the unit so dust and splashes can’t get to the wiring. We also used aluminum sinks and heat-resistant polymers to keep the control board cool, even when the room is steaming up. One heads-up on the install: because we filtered the light to save the eyes, the lamp itself can run a bit hotter to keep you feeling warm. Just give it some breathing room. If you mount it too close to a ceiling that doesn’t handle heat well, you might end up with some ugly discoloration. Getting it running We kept the connectors standard, so swapping these in is a breeze. The wiring is pretty simple, but here’s a pro tip: watch out for the initial power surge when the lamps kick on. We started using soft-start relays to handle that first hit. It stops the filaments from burning out early, and in a humid bathroom, it easily doubles the life of the lamp. Simple fix. Huge difference.
