Here is the thing about infrared lamps: more power isn’t always better. If you just grab the highest wattage on the shelf, you’re probably just throwing money away—or worse, turning your bathroom into a sauna. The trick is matching the heat to the actual size of your room and how much steam you’re dealing with.
Size Matters (But Not How You Think)
Infrared is different because it doesn’t bother heating up the air. It goes straight for you and the surfaces around you. If you’ve got a tiny bathroom—maybe under 4m²—a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. In a space that small, overkill is a real problem. The room gets too hot too fast, the thermostat kicks in and out constantly, and you’ll end up burning out the lamp way sooner than you should. But if you’re working with a larger space (around 6m² to 10m²), you’ll want to look at 600W to 1000W units. If you go too low here, the heat just vanishes before it ever reaches you. Where to Put It
Placement is everything. Put the lamp right where you actually spend your time. The best part about short-wave infrared is that it’s an instant punch of warmth. None of that waiting around for a traditional heater to slowly wake up while you’re shivering. It’s just… on. One quick warning: check your ceiling. These lamps get seriously hot at the quartz envelope. If your ceiling isn’t built for high heat, you might end up with a scorched finish or warped boards. Not a great look.
Power vs. Your Wallet
Faster heat usually means a bigger draw on your electrics. Just make sure your wiring can actually handle the load if you’re installing a few different lamps. A 1000W lamp is fantastic for a quick blast of heat to dry off or warm up. But if you leave it humming for hours? Your energy bill is going to feel it. Just Think about how you’ll actually use it. Do you need a quick burst of warmth, or something that keeps the room cozy for a long time? Pick your wattage based on that.
